Chapter Six

Milly

When I pulled up at Francesca’s house it was almost 9:30pm. Walking to her door was like déjà vu; she opened it before I made it to the porch. The living room was dark as I stepped inside and closed and locked the door behind me. Francesca motioned for me to follow her. We walked through the house to the kitchen and out the sliding door into the backyard. It was nice warm night with only a light breeze and dozens of stars out to keep us company. She plopped down on one of the wicker chaise and I squeezed in beside her. We sat without speaking for a few minutes and I rubbed her back as she sniffled and blew her nose occasionally. Finally she took a deep breath and turned to me.

“I’m pregnant.”

I gasped. “You are WHAT?”

She nodded and her eyes welled up with tears again.

“Oh my god, how? You have an IUD!”

She shook her head. “I had the one that was only for five years and when my five years came up earlier this year I decided not to get a new one. I’ve been IUD free for about five months now.”

“You never told me that!”

“I know. I’m sorry. I’ve been completely wrapped up in Thomas and I have been a bad cousin to you.”

She was right so all I could do was nod.

“Okay so tell me the whole story. How did all this happen?”

“Well Thomas and I have been talking about the future and the subject of kids came up. He said he is ready and I said I’m not. We went back and forth about it for a while then decided to table the issue and revisit it at a later date. I thought more on it and figured I could compromise so when the time came to renew my IUD I opted out. I didn’t tell him about it because I didn’t want to get his hopes up; I’m still not ready for kids.

Well the decision was made for me. Last week I realized that my sense of smell has gotten crazy strong and my usually favorite drink at Starbucks, the green tea latte frappucino made me nauseous beyond belief. After three days of nausea and one day of actually puking I made an appointment with my OB/GYN. I didn’t know for sure but I had a nagging feeling that I might be pregnant. We always use condoms, even when I had my IUD but as my doctor told me today, the only form of birth control that is 100% effective is abstinence. So here I am.”

I looked at her, stunned by what I heard. My little cousin was about to be a mama. The fog of my joy for her cleared some as bits of her words hit me.

“Wait a minute, why did you say you aren’t ready for kids? You’ve wanted to be a mama since you were 12 when you were walking around packing five stuffed dolls on your back calling them your ‘miracle quints’.
